Fire protection design center
Firestop solutions for a variety of applications
Hilti helps architects, engineers, specifiers, and building owners by providing safer firestop solutions with simpler and more intuitive installation options designed to help preserve property and protect lives. Hilti’s extensive range of firestop solutions provide first-class protection in a wide array of conditions.
Identifying the correct firestop system to meet project needs and requirements is critical during design and construction. Hilti has a one of the largest and most comprehensive libraries of firestop tested systems which can meet a variety of project needs.
Firestop Protection Applications
Construction Joint Firestopping
To help prevent the spread of fire or smoke within a building, certain walls, floors, and other joint assemblies are required to provide a specific fire resistance rating. This is where firestop comes in: sealing these fire resistive joints along with other through penetrations in your structure is a way to support proper containment of fire, smoke and toxic gases. Compartmentation is a critical part of an effective passive fire protection strategy, helping to prevent the spread of fire and smoke and ensuring life safety.
To the trained eye, the quality of construction work is decided by the quality of its joints. Construction joints are unavoidable. They exist to allow for movement between two building elements, such as floor-to-floor, floor-to-wall, wall-to-wall, head-to-wall, bottom-of-wall or other perimeter joint assemblies. This adds up to countless gaps through which fire and smoke can spread between building compartments. Hilti has a range of firestop solutions to address these joint applications and provide additional benefits and attributes beyond fire protection to meet various project needs.
Mechanical Penetrations Firestopping
Hilti has a wide portfolio of firestop solutions for common mechanical applications including heating, plumbing, air conditioning and cooling systems. Pipe penetration assemblies are critical areas for firestopping, preventing flames, heat, and smoke from spreading, which can help save lives and minimize damage if fire breaks out. Even these seemingly small gaps in fire-rated walls and floors are enough for smoke and toxic gasses to spread rapidly. To maintain the fire resistance of walls and floors, it is essential that every opening is sealed using a well-designed firestop system.
Despite its undeniable importance, firestopping is still often treated as an afterthought. Cost overruns, strained budgets and scheduling conflicts between trades on-site are virtually unavoidable if fire protection is neglected until the final project phases. Innovative firestop solutions and an extensive library of firestop tested systems are available to help ensure fire protection can be incorporated into a project’s design and successfully installed on site.
Curtain Wall and Edge-of-Slab Firestopping
That narrow gap between your floor slab and façade is bigger than it looks and adds up to create open space for gas, smoke and flames to rise from floor to floor. Almost all international building codes now recognize how critical perimeter fire barriers are to the overall building safety plan. Ambitious designs and strict schedules mean that perimeter fire containment must be quick and easy to install correctly. Acoustic, thermal and movement requirements cannot be ignored either.
With these industry trends in mind, we have developed inventive fire compartmentation solutions that not only help protect lives, but can also help solve other engineering, specification and installation challenges as well. Pre-formed firestop barriers and versatile sprays and sealants are at the forefront of the next generation of fire protection solutions and performance.
Hilti’s fire barrier systems are available for traditional fly-by stud, zero spandrel and steel back pan curtain wall configurations. Hilti’s vast library of firestop solutions are unrivaled in the industry, ranging from traditional spandrel glass designs, 100% vision glass or other façade types, such as EIFS or other traditional building envelope materials.
Hilti was the first manufacturer with a tested perimeter fire barrier system for full vision glass with Intertek listing HI/BPF 120-11. Previous full vision glass designs were highly dependent on Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) approval as there was no provision in the code to test these systems. With our new systems, architects and owners now have assurance that their full vision glass design is secured and backed by a tested system.
Back pan or shadow box systems offer architects, fabricators, and facade installers numerous benefits. These systems are used commonly on unitized and stick built curtain wall systems. Hilti's Intertek system HI/BPF 120-12 is the first back pan system that does not require a stiffener. This translates into huge savings for the contractors.
Innovative firestop solutions and an extensive library of firestop tested systems are available to help ensure fire protection can be incorporated into a project’s design and successfully installed on site for curtain wall and edge-of-slab applications.
Electrical Penetrations Firestopping
Most buildings and facilities are in a constant state of change, especially when it comes to electrical and communications cabling. How do you remain flexible and adapt to constantly changing infrastructure demands without compromising reliability and protection against fire and smoke? How do you help ensure airflow control and energy efficiency in your facility? In mission-critical facilities such as hospitals and data centers, flexibility is key as changes in technology and equipment lead to complex installations and frequent re-penetrations. Hilti offers a complete range of tested and approved fire protection solutions for telecom, Datacom and various other low voltage cabling applications.
For building owners and Facility Managers, keeping IT infrastructure up-to-date and limiting downtime can be a challenge. Regular moves, additions, and changes (MACs) in buildings in areas such as server and operation rooms require cable penetrations to be continually revisited, often leading to the fire protection materials not being properly replaced which may compromise safety.
Pre-formed firestop solutions offer an alternative that not only makes the building safer, but also helps improve its energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. Choosing the right products and assemblies facilitates proper installation and inspection while supporting business continuity. These innovations also limit the risk of fibers and dust and can improve airflow management.
Our portfolio of modular and high-performing firestopping devices helps enable flexibility and optimal capacity for low-voltage cabling on demanding projects. Whether you run raw or pre-terminated cables, our products help you to mitigate the risks associated with frequent cabling changes. This helps increase productivity and profitability by reducing your operating costs while still meeting the highest safety standards.
Firestop Sleeves and Pathways
Hilti’s expanding portfolio of pre-engineered devices offer optimized systems for cable management, providing productivity, performance and value. Our speed sleeves provide ultimate airflow control at all cable fill ratios. With the introduction of our new CFS-MSL Modular Sleeve System, Hilti brings a flexible design engineered to maximize cable capacity while minimizing the opening needed in the wall or floor.
Firestop Blocks
Firestop blocks, CFS-BL, are pre-formed, reusable soft blocks for sealing penetrations with cables. The blocks are highly productive and easy to install and remove.
Firestop Sealants
Intumescent, flexible and silicone firestop sealants all provide a strong barrier in many fire-rated cabling applications. These high-performance firestop sealants are commonly used in through penetrations in a variety of base materials, including concrete, masonry and drywall.
Firestop Composite Sheet
Hilti’s Intumescent stainless steel composite sheets are ideal for sealing large openings and are designed for use with cable management devices to firestop medium and low voltage cabling applications.
Firestop Putties
Adhesive-backed firestop putty discs can be used for single cables, conduits and bundles in openings up to 1" and are easy to wrap around cables. These putty discs are versatile and provide a fire barrier for many applications involving low-voltage and mid-voltage cables, conduits (Electro-Metallic and Non-Metallic Tubing) and base materials (gypsum, concrete, masonry and wood).
Firestop Plugs
CFS-PL Firestop Plugs are a reusable intumescent firestop solution for permanent or temporary cable openings in walls and floors. These plugs seal around cables and cable bundles in wall and floor openings, simplifying installation and retrofitting of cables.
Firestop Foams
Firestop foams are designed for small to medium sized openings. Our easy-to-install flexible firestop foam is re-penetrable to allow for future cable capacity, while our rigid and fast-curing firestop foam provides excellent water resistance to help create a fire, smoke, and moisture barrier around mixed penetrations.
